Stone Edge has just completed a project at The Chapel & Priest’s House, Barden Tower, on the Bolton Abbey estate in the Yorkshire Dales. We have constructed a new extension to the chapel; a WC block in an existing void below ground level. The facilities are accessed through a new doorway from the chapel. This is a highly sensitive location; it is Grade I listed, a Scheduled Monument, and run as a wedding venue. The image above shows the void before work began alongside the architect’s sketch of how the new building sits within the space.
Stone Edge’s masons carefully raised the height of an existing opening to form the new access doorway. They also carried out cleaning and consolidation of historic masonry. It was a condition of the planning that this needed to be retained – and the neatest solution for one section was to build a cupboard around it. It’s quite a surprise when the door is opened to reveal what’s inside.
We called upon all our skills and experience as a principal contractor to deliver the tricky scheme. The first class results and finish speak for themselves.
