Manchester Town Hall
One of the biggest and complex heritage projects to take place
OUR WORK HERE
Manchester Town Hall is one of the biggest and complex heritage projects to take place. The Grade I listed building is undergoing years of repairs, regeneration and restoration. Originally constructed in the 19th Century, Manchester Town Hall is one of the UK’s finest architectural buildings and requires careful restoration to bring ‘Our Town Hall’ to the people of Manchester.

Stone Edge continues its specialist stonemasonry work on the Manchester ‘Our Town Hall’ restoration, a landmark heritage project ensuring the longevity of this historic building. Appointed by Lendlease, we have been on-site since November 2019, contributing as the longest-serving contractor within the six-year programme.

Throughout the project, we have reached a number of key milestones including the reinstallation of the Victorian chimneys, lightwells, and main facades using a 300-ton mobile crane from John Sutch Cranes Ltd. Our local team of skilled stonemasons and apprentices take great pride in their role in this once-in-a-lifetime restoration.

Stone Edge continues to support the project’s social value initiatives, employing a local workforce and training six apprentices, some of whom have completed their entire stonemasonry apprenticeships on this site. Our supply partnership with Johnsons Wellfield ensures high-quality quarry blocks for the restoration.

Our current works undertaken include:
  • Crest stone installation
  • Drop pendants fixed with phosphorus bronze bars and resin
  • Burnt sand mastic around sash windows
  • Porch balustrade dismantle
  • String course stone installation
  • Window to door transition
  • Terracotta brick replacements and repointing
  • Mortar repairs on window cills

The town hall has been a constant presence in Manchester’s skyline for the last 145 years and it is fantastic to be involved in the first project to restore it since 1889. Our skilled local team of stonemasons and our apprentices are very proud to be contributing to the revival of this wonderful historic building”
