Pontefract Castle, Pontefract, West Yorkshire
Conservation and transformation project
OUR WORK HERE
Pontefract Castle is an ancient scheduled monument. The ruins of the castle sit in the heart of the town and the site remained open to the public during the works.
Stabilisation and consolidation of the ruinous structures was required around the large site, as well as repointing. This required careful protection, with the project taking place all through the winter.
Some areas of the castle were made safe and opened up to the public for the first time in many years. This involved the careful introduction of new masonry to the historic fabric, consolidating the structure through honest repairs. Soft capping was added to the wall heads where needed, to provide additional protection from the elements
During the contract period, we held engagement events for young archaeologist’s groups and a ‘Meet the Mason’ event at the castle’s Christmas fair.
